Whats wrong with my 4mp?

I have a Laserjet 4mp which has given me years of great service.

Recently, the output began looking "streaky; areas where the print was
faint; would vary from dark to faint on a horizontal plane (along the
line), but would appear in roughly the same place from line to line in the
vertical plane. I tried shaking the toner cart...no help. Went and bought
a new HP cart...same thing occurs.

Is it time to kiss this printer goodbye? What beyond the toner cart can
cause these symptoms? Any reasonable fix?

Thanks

Gary

Check out the fuser. If it's the fuser, you can get a new one for not
much money. Look for them on eBay.

Thanks for the advice, but I have no idea how to "check out" the fuser....or
even where it's located.

It's been a helluva long time since I had a 4MP, but if I recall
correctly, the fuser is accessible via the door in back. You should be
able to find a picture of the fuser for this printer somewhere on the
net, perhaps even HP's site. It just pulls out, I think. Once you get
it out, pull down the cover thingy and look at the surface of the
roller inside. If it is worn out, the surface will show an obvious
stripe all the way around it. This area is where the white stripe in
the printout will be.
