What's wrong with autostarting? Why nobody likes it?

I put my opticals on an ATA133 pci card, and now they won't autostart. I
asked in another hardware group how to fix this and everyone who replied
said I should not be autostarting because it puts things on my computer.
What are they talking about and what is the big deal about autostarting?

Thanks.

Got to Start, Help and Support, and Search for AutoPlay. Click the Link
and follow the instructions.

Doubt that is going to work for opticals on a pci card, and I didn't ask how
to get it back. I asked why people had a problem with using autostart.

Thanks.

some audio cds from sony have software that is now considered as SPYWARE.
These programs installed without you knowing it to make sure you could not
copy the disk.

Sony has been sued now over this....

This is just an example

But if I run set up on whatever cd I have put in the drive, doesn't that
produce the same result? I mean, won't the crud be installed that way as
well? Of course, this does not apply to audio cd's. But I could hold down
the Control key to keep the drives from autostarting.

The thing is that when you autostart the cd may contain an executable that
installs the spyware/malware stuff.. while if you do not have the autostart
enabled you can browse through the CD or DVD first to see the content.
Of course you can press the CTRL key. Personally I don't like things popping
up on me when I insert CDs... In any case I don't think that its much of a
problem.

People are overly cautious of such things, and at the same time are not
careful enough in the physical world....

Sorry, read it as a multiple question. As for Autostart/autorun, I
personally dislike the potential for unintended results. As in installs,
music starting, movies playing etc. as well as disasters like the
previously mentioned Sony fiasco. Normally I just want to see the file
listing and why should I have to hold down a key every time i want to
insert a CD? So since the cost for "convenience" is greater than the
"benefits", the correct setting is to disable the nuisance.

I just walked in on the tail-end of this post, and likely I don't fully
understand the questions regarding "autostart/autorun" but I notice you have
your optical drives on a ATA133/PCI controller.

I ran into a issue several years ago where I was unable to burn CD's using
ROXIO CD Creator while my CD burner (optical drive) was plugged into my
Promise Ultra100 controller (PCI).

I moved the CD drives back to the IDE controller on the motherboard and the
problems went away.
At the time, I couldn't find anyone that knew that.

I guess ATA controllers are most happy if hard drives are attached and
nothing else.
I have four (4) HD's on my controller and two (2) CD drives on the
motherboard.

I know this is off-topic, but maybe useful...

Best regards,

Richard in Va.

PS. I don't much care for autorun either, one of my drives I have set to
give me the list and let me choose which application to run.
