Bob Phillips

It's a slow day today, so I thought I would add an off-topic post.

I usually listen to Radio4 when I'm on air, but today I went to some of the
'Listen Again slots on Radio 2 and listened to Bob Harris' Country
programme. Magic, I listed to, and greatly enjoyed

The Late Great Golden State, Dwight Yoakam,
Not The Temblin' Kind, Laura Cantrell
Wasn't Born To Follow, The Byrds
Wayside / Back In Time, Gillian Welch
Orphan Girl, Emmylou Harris
I'm Still In Love With You, Steve Earle (with the wonderful Iris de Ment on
backup vocals)
Folsom Prison Blues, Johnny Cash
Fair To Midland, Dwight Yoakam
Don't Let Me Go, Jesse Sykes
Two Door Ford, Chris Scruggs

The Gillian Welch track even prompted me to order the album.

Listening to the Byrds again just 'forced' me top listen to the 'Notorious
Byrd Brothers' album again. Fancy Neil Young (Live In Austin maybe), or
maybe Jonathan Richman, The Undertones or John Hiatt maybe next. No, I
know - Dr John's Gumbo.

Anyone else plugged in. If so, what are you listening to to dilute the
caffeine?

Hi Bob.

Hey Bob. I'll not knock Country *or* Western -- chacun a son gout -- but
there's a time & place for everything. After a 6-day week one needs to
regenerate. Thus, Sunday p.m. + here = screw the caffeine, fetch the JD,
throw on In Utero. Or some Satriana, or Vai. I never heard of Laura
Cantrell - any relation to Jerry?

Rgds,
Andy

Hi Bob!

Nothing wrong with off-topic "what I do while I'm at the computer?"

"Music While You Work" used to be one of the most popular programs on
the Beeb's Light Program. Life before Radio Caroline was that
music-less! Radio Luxembourg on a Sunday was about all we had worth
listening to in my shoe box on't motorway.

I have recorded all my pop and C&W CDs onto my hard drive with
Microsoft's Media Player. I set up various playlists and play them at
random according to mood.

Generally I prefer classical but that's for listening to at much
higher quality (and volume) than I can get out of this system. Plus
it's for winding down. Had a hard week? Start with Rite of Spring and
work progressively down until you get to Gregorian chant.

Try some Aussie C&W. Slim Dusty and John Williamson. Goes down well
with a VB or three.

Don,

Spent 6 months working in Austin a while back. Got to love the Austin scene
and Tex Country, Jimmy dale Gilmore, Townes Van Zandt, Jerry Jeff, Butch
Hancock, and of course Steve Earle. A different, and good, brand of C&W.

Bob

Feel free. It's like supporting Arsenal, you get some used to the doubters
that. you're uncomfortable if people aren't knocking it.

Apart from Satriana, these are new names to me. Care to shed some context so
I can decide whether I should seek them out? You know, what musical line do
they follow through, who is in a similar vein.

Doubt it. Apparently she is a financial whiz, hosts her own radio show, and
sings. I bet she looks good too!

Cripes. A little slow on the uptake here -- please tell me you're *not*
saying you're a Gooner?

Surfing with the Alien is a total classic. Satch taught Vai at one stage.
Vai was playing with Zappa when he was about 18. He invented the 7-stringer
(OK, somebody else probably did it centuries before, don't quote me). If you
haven't heard them by now and given your follow-up to Don, you should
probably pass. One thing you might enjoy tho' ; Crossroads the movie (no,
not Britney). Stars Ralph Macchio (yes, the Karate Kid), Vai does some party
pieces in it. The story sucks, but Ry Cooder did a lot of the soundtrack --
some really nice bottleneck stuff. Deleted -- try ebay if at all interested.

Rgds,
Andy

Andy,

You're talking my sounds now. I like Country, but not just Country.

I have Crossroads on video, must have watched it a dozen times, great movie
for the sounds. I am a big Ry Cooder fan, big Beefheart fan, Zappa, and all,
so I am surprised I haven't heard of Vai. My daughter bought me 'Gimme Dat
Harp Boy' recently, 'Roots of the Captain', great stuff.

So I think we have some tastes in common.

As for the Gooners. Well yes, I was once, but I went to rehab and I'm cured
now. When I moved away from London it became too difficult to follow them,
and as it coincided with a period of dull football (did a Gooner say that?),
I just drifted away.

Bob

??? -- so am I, he's IN it!!! Good potted history here
http://www.vh1.com/artists/az/vai_steve/bio.jhtml ("Passion And Warfare" ...
welded together jazz, rock, funk, classical, and metal nuances within a
melodic instrumental framework). So, no country, then. <bg> Personally
recommend "Alien Love Secrets" or "Fire Garden" (incredible time signatures
on the latter), but NOT easy listening.

Thread ends, or mail me direct to continue.

Gordon Lightfoot played our club once for free cuz we couldn't afford
to pay his fee.

*****************************************************************************
And what year was this?? That doesn't make sense - you can't afford to
pay the fee so the guy says, well okay then, skip the fee, I'll do it
gratis? Huh?? Was this a charity gig?

Yes Annie, there are good people in the world.

No. It wasn't charity. Gordon was in Austin doing a "high dollar" concert
and came to our club after the show was over.
He decided, on the spur of the moment to do a set of about 5 songs for FREE.
We were appreciative. These were the days when we did actually sit on the
side of the hill (instead of a studio) for Austin City Limits. At that time,
it was only folk or country folk, or Austin music.

Peter Yarrow did the same thing one night after the "Kerrville Folk
Festival" had shut down for the night and just the group was left to sit by
a fire on the side of a hill near Kerrville and pass the bat around.

Ye Gads, what a treat! Was he solo then, or did he have some of his
band with him? Do you remember which songs (or was it *that* far back
<g>)?

You are referring to Lightfoot and not Peter Yarrow, right?

Well. Let's see if an old man's memory works. The "for pay" concert was with
a band (I think but I didn't go) but his set at our club was solo. Remember
the names of the songs, NO.....
