i been browsing newegg lookin for a card in the 100-158 dollar range. Really
had my heart set on a 9800 but out of the thousands & thousands they have
there was only one 9800! Is this a good sign or a bad one? Also these xt
1200's & 1600's etc. What is roughly the equivilent to the 9800? and to the
9600? Thanx in advance for your help.

If you're talking about an ATI 9800 Pro or XT, they were discontinued years
ago. In fact, even the replacement of those cards (X800) has been basically
discontinued, as it's not available on the ATI website anymore.

One would assume that since you were looking at a 9800, you must have an AGP
board, since the 9800 was never made in a PCI Express version. If you go to
newegg, and do a search like:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...09639&Subcategory=48&description=&srchInDesc=

I'd choose the X850Pro for $129, I think

I don't know much about the performance of the X1650, though. It's a pretty
new card, and there's a couple of those in your price range.

And yet you see new 9800 cards advertised on eBay all the time.
There must be a stockpile of them somewhere.

You might want to check for AVIVO. I think it's on the X1xxx boards.
It'll make powerDVD and any TV driving you do better.

I just upgraded from a 9800Pro to an X850Pro - which is still about 2
generations old - and paid a little under $200 for that. The
performance boost was between 200 and 300 percent over the 9800. That's
on a 1.8GHz AMD system.

So if you're looking to pay even a hundred bucks for a 9800, I think
you'd be doing yourself a disservice by not looking at something at
least one generation newer.

Ditto on the 9800Pro to X850Pro upgrade path. I did the exact same thing a
few months ago.
If you are wanting to stretcha bit more life out of your AGP based graphics
sub-system without breaking the bank, I would definately choose the X850Pro.

Did you stick with the stock cooler? Only thing I found annoying was
the noise the stock fan makes when you're taxing the card.

I got an Arctic Cooler, and although I had to sacrifice a second slot
for the thing, it's dead quiet.

Which Artic Cooler did you put on your card?
Model number...etc.

ATI Silencer 5.

Went on easily enough. Only 'drawback' is that the Pro card doesn't
have the temperature sensor activated, so I can't really tell how much
of a difference the cooler's making to temperature. The 850XT does have
the temperature sensor turned on, and you *can* flash the Pro with the
XT firmware, giving you the added functionality, higher speeds, and
more pipelines enabled. I tried it, but it wasn't stable for me so I
went back to the stock firmware. The speed increase was maybe 8 or 9
percent over what it had been with the Pro firmware. But, given that it
started locking up, I chose not to push the envelope too far, and went
back to stock.

The Arctic Cooler is very quiet, however.

Thanks for the info. I'll check into it.
