That's a client program for sending and fetching files over a network
using the "Trivial File Transfer Protocol". It's a bit like FTP except
that it doesn't use userids and passwords for authentication.

If you're not invoking the program yourself (it's a command-line program,
so you'd have to open a command window to do it), it's possible that a
trojan has been installed on your system and is using TFTP to send data
from your machine to some other machine, or doing something similarly
nasty.

So, unless you're running the program yourself, you should NOT allow it to
pass through your firewall.

Then, find out what's running on your machine that's trying to use the
TFTP program.

that is (trivial file transfer protocol)this is used for transferring files over the internet. when files are transfered to your computer it does not require authentication. so i'm not sure what's trying to get in. windows nt with ftp (file transfer protocol) does not support tftp. if you have been swapping files with someone it could be that. hope it helps.

The "tftp.exe" program in ..\system32 is a client application which
initiates connections to external servers, so this is a case of something
trying to get OUT, not in.

There is no TFTP server supplied with WinXP, although you can get them
from non-MS sources.

There was (is?) a virus/trojan running around that installed a TFTP server
on infected machines, but the file was named "svchost.exe" to hid its
function.

just did somemore research and it could be a trojan or something you really don't want. personally i wouldn't allow it:)

I just did a search on my computer. This stands for "Trivial File
Transfer Protocol App" and is a Microsoft pgm installed with Windows XP.
I don't know what it does or under what circumstances that it is called
for. Go to Microsoft and search their Knowledge Database for more info.
Best I can do. Anyway it is not a worm/bug/virus, etc.
