When i try to open a file an error appear at the same time it says "Windows Media Player has encountered an unknown error" and "The file is already in use. Close other programs that may be using the file, or stop playing the file, and try again."

What type of file is it? It's possibly using a codec you do not have.
If this is only happening in WMP it may be best to ask in the WMP newsgroup.

As far as I'm aware dat files are data files and this will be the reason.
Where did the dat file come from?

Here's an old post that might help:

11/2/02 post - The most common reason to discuss ".dat" and ".mpg" is:

".dat" is the filename extension given to MPEG files that reside in the
"MPEGAV" directory on the files system of a VideoCD.

The MPEG files named with the ".dat" extension are simply that: MPEG files
named with a ".dat" extension.

To change from .dat to .mpg, just rename the file.

I wanna know tht lke in adobe premiere we can import files with .rm
extensions but in windows movie maker it can't be done so can u tell me wat's
the probem

There's no problem.... when you pay a healthy price for a higher level video
editing software package, you should get more features in it than you do in
entry level software such as Movie Maker.

Import it into Premiere and then save the movies as DV-AVI from it, and then
use them in Movie Maker.
