My Outlook had to be re-installed and I lost my contact list which is very
large. I see several files in the recycle bin. Is one of them by contacts?

Autocomplete cache is an NK2 file, named for your profile, often
outlook.nk2.
Paste the following line in the address bar of windows explorer;
%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
and it will open to the folder where its stored.

There are two sources of contact information in Outlook
The autocomplete is in the .NK2 file
The contacts folders, calendar, and e-mail are in a PST or OST (Exchange
users) file.

Tell us:

1. Why did Outlook have to be reinstalled
2. How did you reinstall it
3. Did you have to reinstall Windows, and if so how
4. Versions of Windows, Outlook, and your antivirus software.
5. Details of your accounts (POP3, IMAP, Exchange, Hotmail)

Your old data is normally found as follows:
File -> Open -> Outlook Data File
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst
