what's the different between DVD-R and DVD+R?

What's the different between DVD-R and DVD+R? I also would like to basic information on how to use it.
 
I have also wondered about this. My DVD drive supports both DVD-R and DVD+R,
and as near as I can tell, my standalone player supports either (I could be
wrong). Is there any reason to use one over the other, or just use whichever
media I can find cheaper?

They are two competeing stds, a bit like vhs and beta, although it looks
like both are here to stay for a while. Whichever you find does the job for
you stick with it.
