The core code of Open Office is based on StarOffice 5.2, however StarOffice
is no longer freeware...

Open Office is Open Source very similar to Star... and will read write most
M$ Office... worth the download...

Is one better then the other? I have both DL ( I have SO from a year
or so), I remember SO did envelopes, can't find how to print envelopes
in OO 1.0.

I would DL the latest version of OpenOffice 1.1
as it has PDF and few other extras as for envelopes you can set any word
processor to this some have templates for easy layout and beleive OO does

http://www.openoffice.org

It is personal choice if you have both... I wouldn't say one is better than
the other.. depends what you want. OpenOffice is still in development
as Open Soursce (therefore basically classed as freeware) where as we know
StarOffice is now commercial.

Hi!

I figure I ask, because I want to take Office 97 off my computer and
give it to my son ( he likes and uses outlook and other Gatesware).

Main differences:

-spellchecker and dictionary
-thesaurus
-hyphenation
-print routine

SO uses commercial variants of these parts.

Greetings,

Joachim

Okay, it's been awhile since I used SO, so I intend to DL OpenOffice.
However, I have Word 2002 and never use it because 602Pro PC Suite is so
sweet! [ http://www.602software.com ] 602Text does everything I used Word
for (except drop caps), except it's better. And free. Plus, it can do all
sorts of diagramming (UML, biz, generic, etc.). And, did I say it's
freeware? The print-to-PDF and some other cool things are only available
with the $30 version, but I don't miss 'em. 602Pro is 16MB and runs nicely
on a P133 with 64M, so it's worth a try if you want something way small.

(OOo = OpenOffice.org, SO = StarOffice)

OOo does *not* have its own desktop environment
OOo is more recent, so it has better support for recent file formats
OOo does not have a database server included (SO has Adabas)
OOo has PDF export (since version 1.1)
OOo has scripting support (since 1.1: Java, Python, etc.)
etc.

Is one better then the other? I have both DL ( I have SO from a year

Insert|Envelope

Insert|Envelope

Damn ! ( sorry ), I actually looked every where, but! there.
Thanks.

OO 1.1rc supports envelope addressing: Insert -> Envelope

now known as SunOffice, StarOffice no longer exists

in the newest version of Openoffice better import filters

In OpenOffice there is no database included, in SunOffice there is a
small database AFAIK
