I just taught a class in Word 2000 and an exercise
instructed us to replace a Page break with a Next page
section break.

I was wondering why we had to do that when the net effect
in the printed version was exactly the same. So what are
your opinions: Why use a Next page section break over a
page break?

Main benefit is to be able to have different page settings (like Headers,
Margins, orientations of page, etc.) If you do use any of these additional
capabilities of a new section by entering the section break, then it is
really no different from a page break. Normally you would always use a page
break unless you needed these capabilities.

Thanks Bill.

I just wondered if there was a memory savings that also
should be taken into consideration.

There is no memory savings. However, getting to grips with this concept
of "page break" vs. "next page section break" is at the heart of
understanding the concepts of "sections".

Understanding "sections" vs. "pages" is crucial for making documents
which have changing formats (which a lot of people want).

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Gotcha'.

The exercise we were doing had no section formatting that
was essentially different after replacing the page break
with next page section break. That's waht threw me off.
Somethimes in an exercise I have trouble rationalizing
their (the author's) motivation for doing particular
things. I just wanted to be sure I was seeing everything
about this replacement.

Thanks again,

DSA

I generally prefer to use paragraph formatting (Keep Lines
Together, Keep With Next, and Page Break Before to control
the placement of paragraphs, unless there is a particular
reason to use section breaks. Page and section breaks
sometimes introduce unneeded complexity. My general rule
is to use the least amount of formatting that will
accomplish what I need. To my way of thinking, paragraph
formatting is "smaller" than section or page formatting.
The main use I have for page breaks is when I am working
with graphics. Others will tell you that I am completely
wrong about all of this. Best advice is to collect
suggestions, discover your options, then find the way that
works best for you.
