A file in the c:\windows directory has been infect with the trojan
horse Dialer. The name of the file is PCTPTT.EXE (70k).

Free AVG reported the file as infected but was not able to heal the
file. I renamed the file to PCTPTT.EX9 and quarantined it in a temp
folder. I don't seem to have the problems I was experiencing prior to
renaming and isolating the file, but am not sure if my system is still
infected or not.

So, I'm asking for your advice on the best free trojan detector. I
have already d/led but not installed Trojan Hunter v3.6 and would like
to know if I should install it or d/l another one such as The
Cleaner, Pest Patrol or Tauscan.

Here is what Pacs Portal,
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_all.php
has to say about this file:

"Country selection for a PCtel HSP56 based modem. Often found in OEM
(Dell,Compaq, HP, etc) systems for their modems included on the
motherboard or as a separate card. Once you've set the modem up to the
chosen country it's not required."

I do have this modem (HSP56 MR) and I understand from the above that
this file is marked N, or Not Required. Still am worried that I may
still be infected. Hence, my request for suggestions as to the best
trojan detectors.

Thanks to all.

Try these

SpybotSD Aims for the dialers, trojans, hijackers and
security/privacy issues.

Spyware Blaster
http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareblaster.html

A-spy For trojans hiding in startup entries.

If you have further problems you might want to ask at a newsgroup like
alt.privacy.spyware or a Windows newsgroup or 24hoursupport.helpdesk

Very offtopic question, since none of them except maybe Pest patrol are
freeware (crippleware perhaps unable to remove) .But if you don't mind
demos TDS 3 is definitely best.

If you have more questions, please follow up by email, my email is valid.

You are fine, IMHO.

Thanks, Boomer. Just today installed SpyBot Search and Destroy.
Tomorrow will d/l the latest update files and run it and Spyware
Blaster.

Downloaded but have not yet installed Trojan Hunter, which supposedly
is good. It's also free if I'm not mistaken. Is it recommended in this
NG?

Thanks also for the alt.privacy.spyware. I'll ask about the Dialer
trojan there. From what I've read it dials pornographic 900 number.

Again thanks to all who replied.

For ideas and links, Google acf ng using the following query (one long
line) and read the the first 10 threads with "trojan" or "anti-trojan"
in the title

group:alt.comp.freeware.*

"spyware remover" OR "trojan scanner" OR "trojan scanners" OR "anti
trojan" OR antitrojan

Sort by date

Some of the information in these threads is repetitive but will
provide applicable advice quickly. Maybe even a fast answer! Those
threads represent the diversity of opinion, recommend a number of
tools (including those mentioned below) and sites (such as antiviral
and anti-trojan trojan scanning evaluations), and other advice likely
to be applicable to your situation.

In addition to antivirals and a firewall, I scan using PestScan
(online, fast), Ad-aware, Spybot, Spy Hunter, SwatIt, TrojanScan
(online), and even Bazooka and X-Cleaner depending upon the day of the
week, the day of the month, the phase of the moon, sunspot activity,
and the twinge in my left thumb.

Good anti-trojan registry monitors, startup managers, and viewers:
WinPatrol, WinSonar, RegistryProt, Autostart Viewer, Autostart
Explorer, StartRight, Starter, Startup List, etc.

Additional good anti-trojan related security tools: System Safety
Monitor, Abtrusion Protector, HijackThis (includes Startup List),
SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, etc.

Good luck with your specific problem.

I don't know if you are already aware of this, Bill, but SwatIt is from
a controversial company, called LockDown.
In the past this has been reason for some in here to state that they
will not use/recommend their software.
YMMV, of course. Just FYI some links:

Fred Langa wrote an open letter to Lockdown :

Just as a side note, the Nov. '03 issue of PC World magazine lists Spybot
Search and Destroy v1.2 as it's No. 1 download.

Nice to see a freeware program getting this kind of traffic and recognition.
I'm not going to jinx it by saying what some of you are thinking... ;)

Very offtopic question,

What is off topic about asking for freeware?

Nothing except he asked for opinions about non-freeware eg Trojanhunter,
Cleaner. In that vein, My answer is also offtopic, in that I recommended
TDS3

Try acting less like a netcop and you will have less misunderstandings.
