What's the best free anti-virus software to use?

i am currently using AntiVir. is there anything wrong with it or something
better out there?

Right. And the scanning engines are the same. Pro versions usually have
additional features. Check the AVAST site for a comparison, to see what

This depends on how much you value your security. If you think you are
a high risk user of the internet then you *should* invest in Kaspersky
Antivirus. It detects more than the rest and more importantly quite a
lot more than any free offerings from alternative vendors.

There are scanners to downoad free also from
eTrend
BitDefender

....the virus defenitions arn't really up to date all the time for them and
they should, likely not be regarded as free...

The BitDefender free scanner is a DOS "On Demand" scanner and therefore would have problems
in deep folders and long filenames in NT based OS'. Same problem as with f-Prot.

I think the OP is looking for an full time "On Access" and "On Demand" scanner for the Win32
environment.
