Just got a new computer P3,WIN98 / XP dual boot and would like some
idea's on program's that scan for or try to prevent Trojans from
getting on my machine.I have a firewall (Outpost) and Anti Virus
program (AVG) already installed but want that extra protection as well

Your brain, if you have one.

Google the newsgroup archive using the following query (one long line)
and sort on date. Read the first ~15 threads (those in 2003). This
query misses a few useful posts, but it will give you a good overview
of the opinions in this group, ranging from firewall but no antivirus
at one extreme to Abtrusion Protector + System Safety Monitor +
TDS-3($) + ... at the other.

"Spyware remover" OR "trojan scanners" OR "freeware anti trojan" OR
(billr trojan) group:alt.comp.freeware

A couple of threads aren't relevant, but they are short -- only two or
three posts longs. Even at dialup speeds, the download for all those
posts isn't long.

Some of the information in these threads is repetitive, but perhaps
this query will save this thread from the same fate as well as
providing you with immediate advice. You will certainly see the
diversity of opinion as well as a number of recommendations for tools
and sites.

My summary for the advanced beginner to moderate user - add a registry
and startup monitor like WinPatrol, WinSonar, etc.; try listed
programs like PestScan (online), TrojanScan (online), Spybot,
Ad-aware, and SpyHunter (all linked in several of the threads you will
find). Some of these are only scanners, but if you know the
infection, finding a specific removal tool is often easy. Repairing
any damage or potential damage may be much harder, of course.

Good luck,
BillR

Try stinger.exe. Just do a search for it on google.

It's recommended by some of the top internetworkers.

Just login as non-adminstrator.

You have made a good start. Outpost I have heard good things about. AVG I do
use and think it is ecellent, You can configure it to scan your emails. I
don't know of any program to "prevent" trojans, but there are two excellent
programs --Adaware and Spybot -- which do an excellent of identifying
trojans, Both are widely available. Try download.com. I always ise AVG to
scan downloads before opening them.
Gave fun...

But I only have "Dad", "Mum", "Rebecca", "Todd" and "Games" listed???

AHHH... Go to Control Panel => User Account. It will tell you whether
a user is an adminstrator or a limited user.

Maybe but it's not an anti-trojan? Just a toolkit to remove some of the
most common malware...
