By the looks of it there are lots of people having lots of trouble with
'Vista'.
Personally I find this OS self sufficient in the short time I was using it
(ca. 3 weeks).
Some of the problems mentioned here were confronting me, but by following
the instructions given in the dialog boxes, I was able to correct all of
them so far without outside help.
A last resort in extreme cases is the 'F8" key method.

In short, this is a very user-friendly operating system.

Am I being too optimistic?

are always issues with every new release of an OS and that is what the
Service Packs are for.

Then you have Ubuntu which will never be good for anything.

To say Ubunto will never be good for anything is a bit misleading. I have
found it good for a laugh.

The need for 'Safe Hex' can never be overstated.
Otherwise there always will be 'issues', as you say, but they are only
'related'.
For most, Vista works the way it is designed. Are there issues? There
are always issues with every new release of an OS and that is what the
Service Packs are for.

Then you have Ubuntu which will never be good for anything.

I don't quite understand the opposition to 'Ubuntu', after all it is free
for the purpose of making it accessible to 'everyone'.
So far I only ran it on my system once without installing and it appeared
totally acceptable and likable to me.

Sure. Just like nearly everyone you see going to a hospital is sick or
injured; just like everyone at an automobile service garage has car
problems. In other words, most of people who post here have problems.
However, compared to the many millions of people who have no problems
and who therefore don't post here, that number is statistically
insignificant.

And, in a great many cases, the problems and/or complains are entirely
self-inflicted. There are three primary reasons for this, which are
pretty much the same every time a new operating system is released:

*1)* They rushed out to buy the newest and shiniest OS without taking a
few minutes to determine:

a. If they really needed a new operating system,

b. If the new operating system would or could meet their computing
needs and desires,

c. If their existing hardware was adequate to meet the new OS'
requirements,

d. If the manufacturers of their PC's components and/or peripherals
(printers, scanners, cameras, etc.) had provided new, Vista-specific
device drivers and/or software to use with their products,

e. And whether or not all of the 3rd party applications that they
already owned were Vista-compatible, or could be made so be a patch or
update from each programs' respective manufacturer.


*2)* A steeper than expected learning curve. Vista is different from
earlier versions of Windows, and learning those differences takes time
and effort.


*3)* A simple, old-fashioned (but all too common) fear of change.
