I reckon I could put a system together with a single screwdriver, but over the years I have built up a substantial set of tools and nick-nacks for specific jobs on the PC - everything from basic CPU installation to cable management and case modding.

What are your most used sytem tools and if you had to put an 'essential toolkit' together what would it include?

(Anyone not familiar with my approach to forums will soon realise that I ask lots of questions like this)

all i got to use is a screwdriver, although ive wanted some other tools to use but right now it seems to suit my needs

...so how do you spread a nice even layer of thermal paste on your CPU? You use the same screwdriver?

:D I'm takin the mickey but i really am interested to know your answer Alf. :p Sorry for being annoying!

nah what i use is a piece of Plasic wrap to smush it down! not only do i keep myself clean by not touching the stuff i can also see how far its spreads :)
im not even sure if it safe for me to do it..

hhmmmm let me see.....

6x screwdrivers
allen key set
torx driver set thingy
needlenose pliers
wirecutters
swiss army knife
magnetic screw picky up type thing
extendable claw picky up type thing (ok, i only got this 'cos it looked like fun :) )
miniature file set
cotton buds
alcohol (i mean the stuff you use for cleaning  )
an (empty) tube of thermal paste
7x card blanking plates
4x IDE ribbon cables
2x FDD cables
3x ethernet patch cables
cable ties x loads
spare screws x millions
2x sound card/CD cables
my trusty USB drive
multimeter
anti-static wrist strap & wall plug
more software than i could be bothered to list.

as you can see, my motto is
it's better to have something and not need it, than to need something and not have it"

this is something i learnt after a couple of years out in the field. ;)

just don't ask me about my spares box

I've got the usual screwdrivers, cables, etc... (not much anti-static stuff though). Plus a box of spares dating back to 1992ish, so lots of heatsinks, fans, 386/486 CPUs, connectors and cables.

I do need some Allen keys though

i use my trusty leatherman, and sometimes a slightly smaller screwdriver than it has, also a pack of zip ties

A toolbox with too many items to list, i would be here all day and then some, but somewhere in there is a scewdriver or two....;)

Im a spark so got everything I need to install everything I do + more. Never ever used a anti-static kit tho. If u not sure about stuff like that jst make sure u earth to case first with power cord in and switched off at socket. Or wrap a piece of stranded cable around ya wrist. I personally think they are a waste of money, only time I used em was when I trained in PCB & computer design/repair and diagnostics. That was like 12 years ago. Never used one since.

Four different toolboxes:

Electronic
Electrical
Builders
Spanners

Plus about 8 boxes full of bits and a lock-up full of I don't know what :D

I'm covered for most eventualites :)

Ummm.... screw driver, a nail clipper with emory board(used only on my pc).

I have a general toolbox full of all sorts of household tools, but the main ones i use for all my computer work are

Screwdriver (with multiple sized '+' and '-' heads)
Bag of zip-ties (very useful)
Electrical tape
Digital Multimeter
Small penknife
Mini torch
Lots of spare screws (the tiny ones that come with HDD and CDROM's etc, I got hundreds now)
Thermal paste
Tissues
Sandpaper (lots of different grades)
Micro-fibre cloth
Little plastic resealable bags (so i don't lose small things when working with them)
...and then all the other junk thats in there for everything else!

I use one particular screwdriver from dads tool box. thats all i ever need. It's magnetic too which is dead handy.
