What's being dialed?

Is there any way to determine which program is dialing
out to the net?

I have heard my computer dialing out at weird times but
nothing shows on the screen. I would love to know what's
happening, and whether I need to delete something but
don't know where to begin.

Usually by the time I get to the system it has hung up.

Virus scans come up empty.

Appreciate your help!
