What's a good working temperature for laptop HD?

On one of my laptops, I'm seeing hard disk temperatures ranging from
48-52C, as measured by MobileMeter. Disk is a 100G Fujitsu MVH2100AH.
I've downloaded the specs PDF for it, and it talks about ambient
operating temperature of 5-55C (ambient), or 5-60C (disk enclosure
surface). I'm not sure if the hard drive sitting inside a laptop is the
same as operating inside a disk enclosure. But the temperature seems too
close to be comfortable in either case.

Agreed. The relevant temperature is disk enclosure surface.
If you leave this laptop running in a hot place, there is a
real risk of the disk dying fast. Even as it is, it will
likely not live too long.

Shoddy laptops design. Likely not much you can do. Except
not buying that brand again.

Too high for me.

That is pretty typical. I wouldnt run it at those max temps myself.

Yep, I wouldnt run a hard drive at those temps myself.

Some of the low end Dells ran the drives right at the limit the hard drive
manufacturer allowed, and got poor hard drive reliability because they did.

You can try something like this

It works for me, but make sure that the grid are consistent with those
of the drive on your laptop.

Actually I got something like that already, but I use it mainly to keep
my lap cool when I'm using a laptop on my lap. I never considered that
it might actually bring the temperature of the system down, and not
just the temperature of my lap. I only used it when typing on my lap,
but other times I just put the laptop down directly onto a table and
don't bother with the device. I'm going to try it now.

Well, in the few minutes I've observed it does look like the
temperature has come down about 3-5C, so far. I got 3 laptops at home,
so now I'm going to have to buy one of these for all of them, instead
of sharing the one.

After 1 day, it looks like hard drive temperatures are down by 10C and
CPU temps are down by 8C. Interesting that I already had the solution
in hand, and I didn't even realize it.

For computers cooling is still critical. Unfortunately many computer
designers seem not to realise this anymore.

Glad it works. I put a larger drive on an old Vaio, the one I am typing
on now actually, and without help the drive gets very very hot. With my
cooler on it stays around 104 F.

Of course Sony or any other vendor will frown at this but the laptop is
still good for browsing and e-mail. Would be a shame to add to the
landfill while it's still useable
