Need to buy a dvd/cdrom drive for new system. I don't need anything
fancy, just a basic unit with any cable(s) I may need. What's a good,
inexpensive brand? Prefer a 1-year warranty. Thx in
advance.............sdlomi

Lite-on.

(http://www.liteonit.com.tw/english/index-english.htm for other drives,
including burners)

My main interest (after speed) was media compatibility. An older 8x drive
form I/O Magic (I don't know who made it; I/O Magic is a repackager) would
not read a lot of my CD-Rs. My Lite-On XJ-HD163D seems to be compatible with
everything I've tried. I hope that the newer models are as good. The tray
mechanism seems to be a little flimsy, but I'm not sharing it with any
children, and it has been entirely trouble-free.

I got it as an OEM model, so length of warranty wasn't a consideration.
Newegg sells retail packages for about $35, including shipping. Perhaps
there's a decent warranty on those.

HTH.

I just purchased a LITEON LTC-48161H (48x24x48x16) DVD/CDRW drive from
www.newegg.com for $60 (including shipping). You can never go wrong
with a LITEON... :-)

I am assuming you are not really asking for capability of burning
DVDs, only reading them.
