What’s New in Security Update Servicing

By now you’ve probably seen that the Service Pack 3 update for Windows XP
Embedded has released. Additionally for those of you who have purchased
Windows Embedded Standard 2009, you should be receiving, or have already
received, the Standard software.

Beginning with the December, 2008 Security updates, servicing for both of
these products will commence. To support Service Pack 3 and Standard
servicing, you will notice a couple of changes to the security update
download. For the past couple of years, we have been shipping a CD .iso image
containing the Security updates. Beginning December, 2008, the Security
updates will be shipped as a DVD .iso image.

Also beginning with the December, 2008 Security updates, you will see a
change to the disk structure. At the top level, there will be a directory for
each product line. Within that top level directory will be a sub-directory
structure for each of that product’s versions currently in support:

\WindowsEmbeddedStandard
\Windows
\WindowsEmbeddedStandard09
\WindowsEmbeddedStandard09_IE7WMP11
\WindowsXPEmbedded
\Windows
\WindowsXPEmbedded_FP2007
\WindowsXPEmbedded_SP2
\WindowsXPEmbedded_SP3
\WindowsXPEmbedded_SP3IE7WMP11
\WindowsXPEmbedded_UPR1


Lastly, you will notice that there are two update directories included for
the Windows Embedded Standard 2009 and Windows XP Embedded Service Pack 3
products. If you are working with Internet Explorer 6 and Windows Media
Player 10, you only need to install the core package, found in the
\WindowsEmbeddedStandard09 folder for Standard or the \WindowsXPEmbedded_SP3
folder for XPe Service Pack 3. If you are working with Internet Explorer 7
and Windows Media Player 11, in addition to installing that core package, you
also need to install the package with the IE7 and WMP11 updates. This package
is found in the \WindowsEmbeddedStandard09_IE7WMP11 folder for Standard or
the \WindowsXPEmbedded_SP3IE7WMP11 folder for XPe Service Pack 3.

The December component database updates for Standard and for SP3 include all
security updates released since those products stopped taking code changes in
their development cycle, so you will see a larger than usual list of included
updates for those products in this December release.
 
So how would i proceed for a complete fresh install of the component
database with all MUI resources and all updates available?

* Install SP1 Databse
* Install SP1 MUI components
* Install SP2 Database Update
* Install SP2 MUI updates
* Install FP2007 Database Updates
* Install FP2007 MUI resources
* Install Update Rollup 1.0

Now what should the next steps be 1) for installing sp3 and 2) for not
installing sp3?

1) (sp3)

* Install SP3 optional update
* Install November security update / December security update if it is
available

Should i rather install the october security update before installing
sp3? Does sp3 include all prior optional updates or do i need to
install those manually beforehand?

2) (no sp3)

* Install November security update / December security update if it is
available

Can i just install those without installing sp3 (I had some issues
with it). Should i install the october update first? Any other updates
since UR1 that i should install beforehand?

I hope someone knows as this is a bit confusing. Can i mess up my
database by installing updates in the wrong order? I guess i can...
 
I just did a fresh install of everything up to SP3. Do I need to install all
the updates since the release of SP3 or can I just install XPEMB_0109 (the
Jan '09 update) for XP Embedded w/ SP3 and IE7 and WMP11 and that will
include everything since SP3 came out? I want to make sure I have all the
security and other patches before we start building images. It's not clear
from the instructions (readme.txt file).

Sorry Demmel, not an answer to your question but a similar question so I
thought it would fit well in this thread.
