What U Hear is missing from Windows Movie Maker

I want to be able to record the sound only into WMA format from a video e.g.
what I post on YouTube. My son can easily do this using the drop down "What
U Hear" option in Windows Movie Maker Version 5.2 / build 2600 using his
hi-spec Dell desktop.

On my newer but lower spec HP laptop, I have the same version and build of
Windows Movie Maker but I do not have the "What u hear" option in the audio
sound source (I only have Microphone, Cd or wave mix but my son has 7
options).

Can I fix this, is this likely a hardware / sound card limitation or would I
be better using other software, say Audacity (?) or similar ?

There ya go. It's the difference between his sound card and yours. My
Audigy 2 card has the "What You Hear" option, while my other computer with a
generic card does not. Both machines are running the EXACT same version of
XP (sp3) and WMM.

Short of changing your sound card, it may be your only way to go.

Simple way to extract audio from a video
clip using Windows Movie Maker....

To save only the audio track of a video clip...
drag the video to the "Audio/Music" track.
Then go to...File / Save Movie File / ect...ect......

This will result in a .wma audio file. Be sure
to drag the clip all the way to the left on the
timeline or you will have dead air at the
beginning.

When I tried your suggestion with Windows Movie Maker I get an Error / No
Entry Logo.

So I tried AoA Audio Extractor but it does not convert sound to WMA (which I
want), only to MP3 or WAV.

So I tried an evaluation copy of the more advanced "X Video Converter" which
has managed to convert the sound from 2 of my 12 videos to WMA but it
refuses to convert the other 10.

I am getting a strange error message "Video frame 0/0 Percent
(-2147483628%)" which I am referring to the company that makes AoA Audio
Extractor and X video converter. I never realized this was going to be so
complicated. Still it keeps me young.
