You've kinda narrowed down your choices by already buying a machine and
asking in a microsoft newsgroup. Based on that, y'all could consider XP
Home, or possibly if you're big on the DVDs and are using a big screen for
that you might roll with Media Centre.

I'm always surprised at "professionals" who STILL have to be asked "Have you
checked (event viewer / syslog)".

This question is akin to asking "I'd like to join a religion. What's the
best religion?"

Worse, when you ask such a question in a Microsoft Windows XP newsgroup,
it's like walking into a Catholic church and asking "What's the best
religion?"

You'll find the occasional troll here whose only purpose here is to tell the
rest of us how foolish we are are to use Windows, and that Linux is much
better, but the great majority of people here believe that Windows XP is the
best choice. I do. For your uses, probably XP Home would be adequate, and XP
Professional isn't necessary.
