I live in an old stone house with 4 floors (including the
basement). I have a computer in the basement (windows 98)
and a computer on the 3rd floor (win xp). I want to share
a broadband internet connection between the 2 of them and
running cable is out of the question. Does anyone think
wireless will work 4 floors away? What about phoneline
networking? Does that work? Any input would be greatly
appreciated.

It might be hard to get a wireless signal from the basement to the 3rd
floor. Can you put the broadband Internet connection and a wireless
broadband router somewhere on the 1st or 2nd floor? Then, neither
computer would be more than 2 floors away.

I'd also consider powerline networking. In my experience, it's much
more reliable than phoneline networking. I use Netgear XE102 and
Speedstream SS2502 powerline Ethernet bridges in my home network, and
they work perfectly together. CompUSA has a 2-for-1 sale on the
Netgear units through August 23. Speedstream makes a combination
broadband router and powerline Ethernet bridge (SS2510).

If the broadband connection comes into the basement, you can use a
hybrid powerline-wireless setup that lets you position the wireless
router wherever in the house it gives the best signal:

1. Connect the broadband connection directly to a powerline Ethernet
bridge.

2. Connect the wireless broadband router's WAN port to another
powerline Ethernet bridge.
