What to look at besides Nikon V-ED?

I've been using a nikon IV-ED (LS40) for a few years now and think its time,
on a budget, to upgrade. I like the way the Nikon's take the film strip
without having to put it into a holder. It also looks like the V-ED will scan
with more range and should do what I need it to. At about $575 shipped from
B&H it seems doable but:

1. Anything else I should consider, I haven't been keeping up on it.
2. Who has good prices now for USA warranted scanners?

thanks to all!

I recently purchased the Nikon V ED and love it, although it is my first
scanner, so I cannot compare it to others.

Just be VERY careful who you buy it from. There are a lot of rip-off
sellers out there that offer a low price and then tell you "Oh that unit
isn't warranted" and "That unit is made in Korea, but if you want the
Japanese version it'll cost you $XX.XX more.

BE advised that ALL new Nikon scanners are warranted - there is no such
thing as one that is not. Per Nikon!

BE advised that ALL Nikon scanners are made in Japan. Per Nikon!

I recently fought a battle with the New York City based rip-off company
where I bought my scanner (and won) because I paid with a credit card. The
ripper off charged more than I authorized, in addition to telling the lies
listed previously. I contacted my CC company and asked them to reverse the
extra charges - which they did - but it has taken months to resolve.

Check the online customer complaints for whichever seller you think you want
to use.

I have an LS50 (and LS30 before that) but if I were to upgrade I'd
give Minolta 5400 *Mark II* a very good look!

It's important that it's Mark *II* not Mark I because they are totally
different scanners. Mark II has a (single) white LED as the light
source while Mark I uses a conventional light source.

The price of both LS50 and 5400 II is about the same but 5400 II has
multi-scanning and 5400 resolution, while LS50 only has 4000 and
multi-scanning has been disabled by Nikon for marketing "reasons". :-/

With Vuescan I'm able to multi-pass scanning on my old Nikon IV-ED and assume
using Vuescan I would be able to do it on the V-ED?

Yes, you can multi-pass multi-scan with any scanner. The catch is to
align the scans before combining them. This is *very* important! If
you want to do that you should check the archives of this group for
many messages on the subject.

Vuescan is virtually the worst possible way to multi-pass multi-scan.
Not only is Vuescan riddled with bugs and totally unreliable, but in
case of multi-pass multi-scan it does *not* align but just blends the
scans together into a blurry mess. To see that you have to inspect the
resulting image at high magnification (~300%) and compare to a single
scan.

However, if you don't care for such level of detail and you were happy
with the results so far then, in that respect, you'll have no problems
with LS-50 either.

Yeah, guess I like really shitty looking images to give to clients. Can't
figure out how I pay my mortgage and bills with my photography business
considering the crap you think I give people.
