Bill

I have 3 separate HDs - C = XP, D = XP clone. I can boot to either, thanks
to the help of these news groups. I also have G, where I'd like to install
Vista Beta 2, which I have done in the past. I would like to install Vista
Beta 2 so I doesn't mess with the XP drives. No boot.ini alterations, no
system restore alterations.........no nothing. I don't want Vista to even
know XP exists. :o)

Yet, I want to be able to have the option to boot to either:
C (my everyday place), D (in case of emergency), or G (to play with Vista).

My recent experience tells me I should be able to:

turn C and D off in the set up
boot to Vista DVD and install it to G
turn C and D back on in set up
edit boot.ini on C to include G

My experience has gotten me into more trouble, or ''learning experiences'',
than I can handle :o)
- SO -
I thought I'd run my latest brain storm by you people first.

Any and all suggestions appreciated, neatness does not count.

Bill

Purchase PartitionMagic: $70.00 Install PartitionMagic into your XP system:
2 hours. Install BootMagic by following the instructions: 1 hour. Delete
partition "G:" 15 minutes. Install Vista using PartitionMagic's "Install
Another O/S" wizard: 2 hours. Not having Vista mess with your XP boot
files: priceless!

Mark,

Thanks for the reply.
I question "Delete partition G" - it is a separate HD, as are C and D
I salute "Not having Vista mess with your XP boot files: priceless!"

It will save about a half hour in the process if you use the wizard. PM
stubbornly deletes, creates and then formats for the new O/S, so if you
start with unallocated space, it saves two steps.

I do not understand how it will delete a separate HD which is sitting there
with nothing on it - but I do not understand a lot of things - going to d/l
PM now

If the hard drive is already formatted, then it has a partition on it. You
can delete the partition without deleting the hard drive. You'll see.
Email me for more, specific instructions, if you wish.

Mark,
I am getting ready to install PM now - I'll let you know how it all works
out - THANKS

One other little tidbit, Bill. When you go to run the wizard, turn off
BootMagic by unchecking the box in the lower left corner of the GUI. If you
think through the steps, it becomes obvious why. To re-enable it after
Vista has been installed and is up and running, boot from the PM CD and
follow the instructions from there.

I go PM installed - no problem
It won't install BootMagic - no fat or fat32 partitions
I don't have a PM CD - just the d/l file
let the fun begin :o)
