ok ....

i am about to buy and build my new computer :)

here are the current specs

amd athlon64 3500+
asus a8n sli deluxe
tagan 480 watt psu
raptor hd
i gig of some sort of ram lol

and here is what i am not sure what to do ...

ideally i would like a 6800ultra... but for the time being i cant afford that much

so what i was thinking... maybe if i got a 6600gt (which shuold last me about a year) and then see what new gfx cards are out then.

Also if i fell i need a bit more gfx power i could get another 6600gt on the cheap :)

do you think this is wise... orshould i go for a standard 6800 ?? although i cant find one in pci-e

thanks, G

a single 6600GT will give you the ability to play any game on a reasonale quality setting, if you cant afford a 6800ultra then i'd get a 6600GT instead of the 6800 just because its cheaper and after 6-12months you'll either get another one or will replace it with a 7800GTX maybe

also what make RAM are you getting ?

also link to 6800, the one right at the top

im not sure ... possibly crucial ... i need help on ram please advise :)

when you say reasonable ... does that mean i can play counter strike and world of warcraft at a good standardwith alot of deatail... or will a 6800 be better?? (i will have a 17inch monitor)

i've been looking at the comparison and the 6600GT is alot better than the standard 6800, you will be able to play them at the default settings maybe even higher but certainly not on max, you should be able to do that at 1024x768

for RAM Crucial, Geil, Corsair, OCZ any will do, get a dual channel kit of DDR PC3200 CAS 2.5 or CAS2 and you'll be ok

I think a 6600GT will do you just fine for now.

And if you wanted to add another later, that will give you the equivalent of a 6800GT at least, or so I've read.

In your shoes, I'd go for 6600GT right now.

Crucial RAM is fine, but it won't overclock much. It is dependable and you'll have no trouble at all with rma's should the need arise, they offer good back-up.

Also consider Corsair; OCZ; Geil and Kingston, but if you want solid dependable no frills memory, I thoroughly recommend Crucial.

PS: If you do decide on Crucial memory, buy it direct from Crucial, it's usually cheaper and they deal with returns a lot better than most online suppliers.

cheers floppy! will take ur advise om that one ;)

ME i know i woudn't be able to play on max resoulution ... not many cards can :p

but the 6600gt should do me well with current games :) ... will it look good with doom3 and far cry ??? as long as it plays world of warcraft and cs with no lag at OK settings i shall be happy :D

well according to the Doom 3, HL2 and UT2004 benchmarks the 6600GT is way up there with 2 in SLI sometimes even ahead and were talking 1280x1024 max detail and 4xAA and 8X AF
