Hi All,

I've got a friend who's NOT computer savvy, and really needs that little
pop-up that prompts you with your options when it discovers a new device.
The problem is that when he plugs his Nikon D70S digital camera into any of
his USB ports, it's immediately recognized, but that windows doesn't pop up.
At first, I thought that it might be because he might have disabled it, but
that's not the case. I've gone into the properties of the drive letter, and
made sure that all the possible file types listed there are set to prompt
the user every time. This doesn't seem to happen with any other USB
devices, like when he plugs in a thumb drive.

Because of the setup of his hardware, he's got a C: and D: drive that are
his hard drive, and a D: and E: drive that are DVDs. He's also got a built
in card reader which are drives F: through J:. When he plugs in the camera,
it becomes drive H:, moving the other drives down 1 letter. I thought this
might be part of the problem, so I changed the drive letter to N:, went back
into the drive letter properties to make sure that all possibilities were
set to always prompt, but it didn't help.

This used to work. For what it's worth, about the time it stopped working,
he was hit by a number of malware programs, the worst being Spy Falcon,
which was something of a bear to remove.

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Try using System Restore to take the system back to a few days before SpyFalcon infested the machine. If everything now seems to be working OK, make a new restore point and delete all previous restore points except for the most recent one. This has worked for me in these situations.
To delete all restore points except the latest one, use the Disk Cleanup utility. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then Disk Cleanup. Click on the more options tab and then select Clean up in the System Restore dialog box.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, one of the first things we did to
get rid of that damn thing was to turn off the system restore. Of course,
we lost all the restore points by doing that.
