Hello,

I think I have finally discovered what the problem was with my Dream PC for
2006.

One of the memory modules was accidently damaged because some sticky tape
came loose and touched the chip which somehow damaged it... the problem only
became apperent after a few weeks.

The reseller which sold me the memory chip went out of bussiness.

Do I have any options to get a new chip from Corsair ?

I can think of two possibilities:

1. Send product/chip back to manufacturer/Corsair ?

2. Ask if some other reseller could handle the rma for me ?

This is more a theoretical question. I don't really need a new chip at the
moment... 2 GB to 3 GB will do just fine...

Ofcourse I don't like 3 GB because that's an uneven number... so 4 GB would
be better in the future.

The chip is probably worth 40 bucks or so... so maybe it's not worth it to
go through all the transport cost trouble... or maybe it is worth it...

I just like to know if I have any options... in case more expensive things
might get damaged in the future and the reseller goes out of bussiness...

Please help/assist thank you and have a nice day ! =D

Bye,
Skybuck.

0. Try contacting the reseller. Maybe they will help you. Maybe
not.

1. Call Corsair first, get an RMA number before returning it. That
is, if you ever care to see the chip, or your money, again.

2. You won't be able to enjoy 4 GB of RAM with Windows. At least,
not easily. Google 4 gb windows memory limit

I believe Corsair has Lifetime Warranty.Just call for an RMA then send
it back.

Sure, for defective products, not for accidentally damaged ones.

Well it's not 100% sure it was damaged.

Maybe it was just defective...

How you gonna prove if it was defective or damaged ? hmm ? ;)

"sticky tape"???????
Nuts! I have NEVER seen any memory modules packaged even *near* any
"sticky tape" unless one wants to count the yellow anti-static warning
label that is used to seal an anti-static bag (ususally metallic looking
bag).
It is YOU that did the damage...

No it wasnt't me I swear :) ;)

It was the sticky tape !

It fell down !

It got sucked in !

I didn't know that would happen.

It was the mean evil machine that did it !

It was the mean chieftec case... !

Bye,
Skybuck ;)

Don't worry about it Skybuck, 3 GB is an even number; always has been :-)

RMAing a item is usually neither difficult nor costly as long as you have
proof of purchase. Simply contact the Corsair customer support and explain
the situation. The fact that the retailer has gone out of business
shouldn't make any difference. All the hardware manufacturers I have had
to RMA stuff to in the past are quite helpful... In fact I have found the
manufacturers to be generally more helpful than the retailers!

Ok,

I live in the Netherlands/Europe.

I just requested an RMA for one corsair memory chip.

However, if I have to ship it to USA than that would probably be more
expensive than just buying a new chip if I ever need it ;)

Hmm cool,

Corsair has a rma address in the Netherlands ! ;)

Very good ! =D

I shall give it a try ! =D

Well there are two good reasons to RMA the chip me thinks:

Reason 1:

In the future it might not find such a compatible chip or it might be too
expensive.

Reason 2:

With 3x 1 GB chips the system is in single channel mode probably reducing
the memory system bandwidth quite a lot.

So with 4x 1 GB chips the system could return to dual channel memory mode
for maximum speed ! (As crysis would say ! ;))

However I am not sure what to do:

1. Should I place the chip in an envelope ? (cost: ? reliability ?)

or

2. Should I make it a little packet wrapped in maybe A4 paper ? ;) (cost: 6
to 8 euro !)

I am guessing option two will costs more than poststamping an envelope...
but again me not sure about that ! ;)

You a funny man Charlie.

3 GB is indeed an even number thanks for pointing that out.

Ofcourse I ment 3 chips... that's an odd number of chips =D

I need even number of chips which is 2 or 4 for dual channel performance.

I think it might make a difference.... maybe 220 to 280 MB/sec versus 180
MB/sec or so.

I am not sure though... but I think the pc achieved much higher speeds than
180 MB/sec for one of my programs ;)

Okay, my mistake.

How do you test the speed?

So put in 4 DIMMs that total 3GB and get on with life. What's the
problem?

(1GB+512MB+1GB+512MB, or 1GB+1GB+512MB+512MB, depending on your
motherboard layout)

I need to RMA the 4th chip ;)

Should I do it in an letter/envolope or a package ?

Bye,
Skybuck.

Well shit,

Today I wanted to get on it... but hotmail has deleted the message.
(Everything goes automatically into the junk mail folder).

Apperently hotmail now deletes messages after only 10 days !

That's way too short !

I have re-asked an rma number ;)

I have made up my mind this is what I am gonna do:

1. Send back one chip.
2. Send it back in the plastic.
3. Wrapped in an envelope.
4. Ask the dude as the post office how many stamps are needed.
5. If it's not possible to mail it.... or if it's too expensive then simply
ask the envolope to be sent as a package.

Bye,
Skybuck.

Hmm,

Change of plan:

The plastic wrapper that came with the two chips doesn't fit in my little
white envolopes.

So I am gonna do this instead:

1. Chip in plastic wrapper.
2. Gonna seal it with some metal clips.
3. Stick some white paper on it and write the address on it.
4. Then I am gonna deliver it as a package at local post office and they can
transport it.

This time I used my @home e-mail address so I don't loose the e-mail again.

Tomorrow if I wake up on time I shall finally send the sucker to it's mother
=D

Bye,
Skybuck =D ;)

Again change of plan:

Metal clips would be bad because it would make it difficult to open it for
them.

So instead I am gonna use plastic stickers.

And no matter what happens, today the chip is leaving my place because it's
holding me up.

My mind goes: chip chip chip chip chip, think about the chip chip chip must
sent chip, must sent chip, remember to sent chip AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH ;)

Bye,
Skybuck.
