What has happened to my hard drive!

I am having this odd behavior with my 80GB hard drive. It is not
recognized on a restart.

Briefly, here is the scenario......... I have a bay in my case that
allows me to swap hard drives. I have several drives with different
operating systems on them and this allows me to have disks with
alternative operating systems with out having to use different
partitions on one drive.

I have my BIOS set up to auto recognize on boot up. This still works
flawlessly. Which ever of several drives I boot with is always
recognized.

Yesterday I was making a new disk image of my 80GB drive. Prior to
making the image, I decided to run scandisk and defrag. Now whenever I
restart this drive, it is no longer recognized during the POST. I have
to actually shut down the system and restart it from a clod shut down
for the drive to be recognized. This is not the case for any of the
other drives. They all are capable of booting from a regular restart
rather than a cold reboot.

Anyone have any suggestions to get this drive back on the program. It
works fine a cold boot, but how to get it to simply restart?

Thanks for any help ...................

Turn SMART off in BIOS.

Thanks for the suggestion......

but it is presently already turned off.

Anything else come to mind?

Cant remember all the details but if FAT32, use Convert to go to NTFS. If
still doing as you said, download clearhdd and let it completely wipe it,
then you can bring it all back again. If still no good, download a disk
drive checker because it sounds like it may be running slow - or dying to
put it another way.
