What the heck, come here and get dozens of virus emails.

Shane

I came here this morning and got great help but on one of
my posts I put my actual email and over the past couple
of hours I have received over 30 virus filled emails
originating from here. This is typically what I've
received from my exchange server:

"Place =
Sender = Microsoft Customer Assistance
Subject = Current Net Pack
Delivery Time = November 10, 2003 (Monday) 13:46:16

Action on file attachment(s):

"WORM_SWEN.A" virus was found in attachment "q684743.exe",
ScanMail has deleted the attachment."

So what is up with that? Paying my dues for coming here??

Shane,

Most of us don't use our real email addresses here for that very reason. It
is a sad state of affairs when it gets to this, imho.

Not at all. Users who visit here and have a virus infected system are
unknowingly sending all of those messages to you. If only everyone
would/could keep their systems clean of viruses, the disease would be
stamped out. You can stay vaccinated by not using your real E-Mail address.
In fact, Microsoft has filled in the default email address for you to
protect you, but I guess you typed over it. The emails you are receiving
should taper off to nothing as long as you don't reveal your address.

So what is up with that? Paying my dues for coming here??

Somebody has a tool that scours USENET newsgroups for email addresses.
Apparently it works pretty well, a colleague had the same experience as you.
He was receiving over 7 of those messages per hour, after one post to the
Access group.

What really sucks is that Outlook Express encourages the situation that
results in all this spam. Type in a bad email, and it says "that address is
bad, are you sure you want to do that?" So the most vulnerable users are
suckered into using real addresses. Obviously, the folks who write the OE
code don't use newsgroups.

All these years that message should have read "Are you sure you want to use
a real email address?"

This situation isn't new, harvesting USENET for email addresses has been
going on for many, many years. But have you ever seen any reference to using
USENET "safely" in a MS publication or help file??????????? Not until last
month. After the fact, in typical fashion. Another vendor with a similar
newsgroup setup has recently changed the way they display email addresses,
to the point that they cannot be harvested. Bravo!

Shane,

I have the same problem, I get about 50 or more spams per day since I put my
real email address on one of my posts a week ago. I wonder how to stop it?
Changing my email address? Is there another way?

Compassionately,

Siggi

Change your email address. It is the only permanent way I know of.

If I have to use a real email addy in a ng, that addy will only be valid for
a matter of hours. www.nonags.com has a way for paid members to set up email
aliases of the form (e-mail address removed) This gets forwarded to my
real addy. If the alias starts getting spam, I remove it. I have the same
feature on my website.
