We Live For The One We Die For The One

Is that 5.1 or 4.1 ? ect ?

Do i need a real 5.1 speaker system to have real 5.1 or go i do it
with my two 2.1s ?

I have them both pluged into my SBLive pluged into the front and rear
ports i suppose, i am getting rear sound as well, i have set Xp to 5.1
in the sound settings.

And when i run the Audio HQ test, its says, front left, front right,
rear left and rear right just fine :)

So do i have 5.1 ?

Thanks.

2 x 2.1 is approximately 4.1. 5.1 requires a center channel front speaker
(the subwoofer is the 0.1 )

Depends on the size of your room & where the speakers are. The further apart
the fronts, the more benefit you get from a centre. The idea of the centre
is to make the speech come from the screen regardless of where you are
sitting. Was developed for cinemas originally, so they had to think of the
folk in the front row at the sides.

If you just have desktop speakers on either side of your monitor and you
always sit front & centre, then it's not necessary.

I'm not sure how software would handle your set up though (which is a fairly
common one btw). If you watch DVD, go into your AC3 codec settings and make
sure that it knows you have 4.1. Then it will automatically distribute the
centre to the front-left and front-right. Games will probably work just
fine, they originated with 4 channel sound.

Finally, you may not have a real .1 channel at the moment. If it's just a
sub plugged into a stereo audio jack with two speakers joined to it, then
that's not .1. The ".1" thing comes from AC3 soundtracks (DVDs), where the
sub has it's own independent channel. You could have a deep bass rumble
shaking the room with silence in all speakers. Way cool. What your system
probably does is to take the front-left and front-right signal, send the
mid-range and high-frequency sound to the speakers, while the sub handles
the bass.

LOL. Been doing 5.1 for many years, was an early DVDer myself. Love it!!

Dunno on your kit suggestions tho...all my kit is hi-fi separates, I don't
have suround on my PC. Might by a Soundblaster Live though, they are only
£25 quid here, not a lot.
