recently, I amhearing a bzzing sound coming from my tower unit.
Sopmetimes, it's only for a very short time but sometimes it is a bit
longer.
What do you think is acting up?
A fan -- most likely. I can think of two scenarios off hand:
1. If a loose wire or some other debris pops into the blades, it's
like having a card in the spokes of a bicycle, until it bounces back
out. Of course, if it found its way in there, it'll find its way back
in. Adding a grill will reduce the problem. This happens a lot more
with the CPU fan, as most people have already have grills on the case
and PSU fans.
2. If the bearing on a fan is starting to go, you might get that
noise too, and it'll be intermittent. It can be a buzzing or a high
pitched warbling or squeaking. As the bearing starts to wear out,
the fan gets unbalanced, causing the noise. It's intermittent,
because it'll sometimes kick back into alignment, and then bounce back
again. Oiling the fan can help temporarily, but really the only
option is to replace the fan. Good luck tracking down which fan
though, as a modern machine can have several fans. In my own
experience, it seems that the larger fans (case, PSU, CPU) are more
likely to be the culprit, as they'll make more noise and be more
noticeable, but it could be any of them.
