What software can't P4 2.4Ghz handle?

Someone I know bought a buget PC some time back. What
surpriced him was that his computer couldn't run a piece of
graphic-intensive game that he bought for his kids. I think
the game was called 'Unreal' or something.

I don't want something like that to happen with my upcoming
purchase. Maybe I don't use some software yet. But I want
to know what software P4 2.4Ghz CPU with 256MB DDR RAM can't
handle excluding those server software and business oriented
software.
 
With a P4 2.4GHz with 256MB of RAM, you can run a lot. Although I would
upgrade the RAM to 1GB and get a fast graphics card, e.g. ATI 9700 Pro.
With the additions I mentioned, you can run almost anything fast, Photoshop,
Unreal, Unreal Tournament 2003. In fact, a machine like that is almost a
server.

Your worry is understandable, considering you are spending money on an
upgrade.

Here's what Microsoft claims a P4 2.4 can't handle - A high-defination Video.
It asks for a minimum 2.53Ghz CPU to start with. Copy from their webpage:

To deliver ultra-high quality, these clips were encoded 24 fps, and at the
resolution noted of either 1280 x 720 (720p) or 1920 x 1280 (1080p).

an optimal experience we recommend systems of at least a 2.53 GHz Intel or AMD
Athlon XP 2200+ or higher processor for 720p and 3.0GHz or greater processor for

The higher the data rate (in Mbps), the higher the resource requirement. For

To add to what I mentioned in my previous post, I download the Terminator clip
at the linked page and tried on my P4 1.6Ghz with 512 mb RAM. The vidoe
staggers when it's not even in full resolution.

1GB of RAM is overkill. 256MB will do just fine for a while. Get
512MB if you want to look to the future. When I jumped to 1GB of RAM,
I noticed no difference whatsoever. The jump from 256MB to 512MB was
negligible.

The video card depends on what games you're going to play.
