does anyone make a 500 GB drive? 1 TB?
standard 7200 rpm, 8 MB buffer, etc?
would they work with current IDE controller cards and win xp pro?

Maxtor just came out with a 300GB.
I believe 400GBs (Hitachi ?) are just being or about to be launched.
Win XP PRO with all updating "should" be able to work with it.
I would assume they would ship IDE controllers with those 400GB.

300GB PATA drives have been here for a while (5400rpm).
Expensive $/GB though ($0.90/GB or so) where the
cheapest $/GB is $0.55 for a 160/200GB 7200rpm
PATA/SATA.

Either Samsung or Seagate had announced a 400GB drive as
well (besides Fujitsu). Biggest SATA at the moment is
250GB.

what's PATA ?
is it faster than SATA?

PATA=Parallel ATA=old fashioned ordinary IDE.

SATA=Serial ATA=the latest and greatest

SATA is faster than PATA.

gotcha. i never heard the term PATA, thought it might be some newfangled thang.
thanks.

waiting for either 100 GB FMD, or a 1 TB 7200 rpm 8 MB buffer hard drive here...

Colossal Storage Corporation 3.5" atomic holographic drive - 100
terabytes of data on a single 3.5 disk similar to a CD-ROM

is it real ???

There's a link on that page to the "manufacturer" of the devices shown. If
you go to that page and read between the lines it's pretty clear that it
exists mainly to separate venture capitalists from their money.

John -

So Venture Capitalist shouldn't invest in new ideas or creations, say,
the United States of America, Medical Research, etc. ?

I really show your understanding of risk capital investing as an
opportunity that sometimes leads to something called an IPO.
Failures are expected along with succeses by the way.

Venture Capitalist should see what is real thing and what is pseudo-science
babble.

Of course, there are VC that will give money for another "guaranteed data
compression miracle" technology or to "digital film" contraption.

Venture capitalists should invest in new ideas that show some slight chance
that they will recover their capital. There is a difference between "new
idea" and "new idea that has a snowball's chance in Hell of making money".

I'm sorry, but that sentence makes absolutely no sense. Perhaps you knew
what you meant to say but your fingers did not obey your mind?
Failures are expected along with succeses by the way.

That does not mean that one should pour money into a highly speculative
venture for which no prototype has been demonstrated, and in fact most
venture capitalists will not fund basic research.
