What should the NodeType be? Right now it's "unknown".

I have a XP home and a XP Pro machine connected via a router. They don't
see each other in Network Place. I did a "ipconfig /all" and found that
the node type of the XP Pro is "unknown".

The XP Home has a node type of "hybrid". Is this what the XP Pro machine
should be? How do I configure it?

John,

Both "Hybrid" and "Unknown" are compatible. You don't want "Peer-Peer". If you
really want to change the value, add or update
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters\NodeType:

Unknown and Hybrid are fine. All of my PCs say UNKNOWN.

If you want your 'hybrid' to become 'unknown':
run the registry editor, open this key:

HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters

and delete these values:
NodeType
DhcpNodeType

Both "unknown" and "hybrid" should be OK -- I see both of them on XP
computers on my network.

Could a firewall be blocking access between the computers?

If you want to explicitly configure the node type:

1. Run the registry editor and open this key:

HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters

2. Delete the DhcpNodeType value if it's present.

3. If the NodeType value isn't present, create it using type DWORD.

4. Set NodeType to 1 (Broadcast), 4 (Mixed), or 8 (Hybrid).
