I am about to buy a printer and having read reviews and looked at posts here
I cannot make a decision.

This may be because I am not very techie and both seem to be good at the
job.

I am a home user, who just prints off letters, articles etc.

We now have a Canon Ixus 4 and so the facility to print off photos to send
to family would be useful.

The printer will be placed on a shelf under my desk and I would want it to
be easy to use when I have to scrabble to the controls in a rather limited
area.

Neither model is very expensive and I guess the cost of replacement
cartridges would be a more important consideration. Do both these brands
take generic replacement cartridges or do I have to buy only branded
replacements?

I live in London UK so would appreciate advice on British models.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

It's not an easy task...there's lots to consider.

Most of the various models would probably suffice for photos and
letters. The price differences are generally geared towards features and
speed.

That limits your choices a bit. If it's really tight, and you don't have
a need for using direct photo printing (no computer involved), then
check out the Canon and HP models with controls on the front. There are
several "Deskjet" models that use the same ink cartridges and print
engines, but cost less because they don't have the photo printing
buttons and LCD display.

My HP Deskjet 6540 is on a deep shelf beside my computer desk, and has a
small control panel on the front, with a paper tray at the lower front
too. This makes it a bit easier to fill with paper for my setup, and the
various control buttons are right there.

Any printer can use compatible cartridges. The real question is quality.

You'll find there are lots of cartridges that may work, but few that
print as good as the originals. If you don't mind refilling your
cartridges, you can safe a lot of money and get excellent quality from
reputable suppliers.

Others in and around your area may have more info.
