I'm the NetAdmin, and I have a programmer who asked me the following question:

"Okay, so if I'm inside the trusted Network and I connect to Exchange with Outlook am I using IMAP4? Or is it MAPI?"

...... and i have NO idea ... any help would be greaty appreciated... thanks in advance!!

Extended MAPI Exchange provider which in turn uses RPC, unless you
explicitly connect to Exchange using IMAP4 protocol.

so, just to make sure i'm understanding you, Outlook as an exchange client is using MAPI - which, as you said, in turn uses RPC to connect to exchange 5.5 --- if i want to use IMAP4 from the exchange client, i have to specifically change that on the client end... right?

Yes, if you want to use Outlook as an IMAP4 client, you need to explicitly
add an IMAP4 server, not Exchange to the profile.
