Perhaps some of you would tell me ,in their opinion, the best printer
in the £40--£50 range to buy
I'd spend more... usually when you talk that price range, we are
talking expensive cartridges or rather thimble sized cartridges that
cost more per page to use, like double or tripple that of a printer
that costs a little bit more.
Something like the HP PSC1410 might seem like a good deal. It's under
£50 delivered, it's got a scanner on it.
But
# HP 21 Black Inkjet Print Cartridge (6 ml) 138 pages about £12
8.6p/page
# HP 22 Tri-colour Inkjet Print Cartridge (6 ml) 138 pages £18
13p/page
vs
Canon ip4200, about £60
pgi-5 black 26ml 500p £12.50 2.5p/page
cli-8 x 4 color 4 x £8 14ish ml 280pages about 11p/page
While raw ml isn't always a good meter, and while taking into account 4
cartridges per 280 pages of color does make it a tad dear (note, the
extra black is seldom used, so 11p @ 5% yield is somewhat exaderated),
black text alone is cheaper by a factor of 3.4. I.e. you'll have to
spend £31 for 3.4 black cartridges for the HP in this example to equal
the amount of ink in the ip4200. Even worse is the fact that the
ip4200 takes what I would consider a medium sized cartridge.
If you are printing less than 500 pages / year, it might not be an
issue. But look at a pack of paper, it costs 20 quid extra to print on
this particular HP per ream than this canon.
