Hello

I have recently bought a new computer desk. Sadly, my existing printer
(Epson 980), is too big, being 46cm wide.

So, I can either saw a bit of the desk off (and knowing me, some
fingers), or buy a smaller printer.

The width available is exactly 44 cm. Height and depth are not an
issue.

I use the printer to print photos, and occassionally, text.

Most of the stuff on the market seems to be wider than 44 cm.....does
anyone have a recommendation ? I'm in the UK.

Cheers,
Keith.

Hi

Buy a longer Printer Cable and put your printer somewhere else. A USB cable
can be up to 15ft long.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I want a printer in the new unit. The
catalogue gave the dimensions available for the PC tower, but not the
printer. I gambled, and lost.

Cheers,
Keith.

If height and depth don't make any difference, turn it sideways.
What does sawing a piece off have to do with making the desk bigger?
Strange.
It would be easy to add a piece or a bracket or something. Maybe get
the computer off the desk and on to the floor or place the printer on
top of the computer.
This is less of a space problem than on of imagination.

Maybe I'm not being clear enough. The area available for the printer,
is a subsection inside the unit, i.e:

-----------
- -
- ------ -
- --p-- -
- ------ -
-----------

where p is the printer.

I don't want to turn the printer sideways, as then I'll have a printer
which spews output sideways, as opposed to forwards. The cables would
then also be visable, as opposed to hidden at the back. My other
solution would be to remove the left or right surround to the 'p'
above, but this would mean ruining the appearance of the unit. I don't
want the printer anywhere other than in the unit, so putting it on the
floor, on top of the unit, or elsewhere is out.

Imagination is not a problem: getting a printer which is 44cm wide (or
less!) is the problem, which brings me back to my original question:
can anyone reccommend a good photo printer, which is 44 cm wide, or
less!

What about a Canon ??

Ip4200 from Canons specs: Dimensions (W x D x H)
419 x 299 x 160mm

Does that do what you want???

Thanks for your helpful post: there seem to be several canons which
satisfy the space problem. I'll have a read of the specs when I get
more time.

Thanks again.

My Canon Pixma iP4000 is 42cm wide, I would
imagine that the newer ones iP4200, iP5200, and
cheaper ones would be about the same size. Will
probably have to take a ruler and visit a store to
be sure.

Well...I don't know what to recommend, but I don't think I'd recommend
sawing your desk apart. It is probably made of compressed particle board and
might just crumble apart after that.

If height is not an issue, HP and Samsung both make laser printers that
should fit in the area you have available. Unfortunately, the models I have
in mind are all monochrome. You might find a compromise in putting the
monochrome printer in the desk where it will fit and relocating the inkjet
somewhere else. Samsung does market a smaller color laser printer here:

http://samsung.com/Products/Printer...erPrinters/CLP_300XAA.asp?page=Specifications

....but it may not be a printer for serious photographic work. (My larger
CLP-550n does an excellent job, but I've never seen photo paper being sold
for color laser printers. Also, toner is more expensive, though you do get
more of it.)

If you have a computer network, you might consider putting the printer at a
different computer and sharing it or buying a (relatively) inexpensive USB
to network printer converter. I have one from Linksys driving a DeskJet 900
series printer and it does nicely. I put the printer in a back room since it
wouldn't fit on my computer table.
