Here is a question that I do not seem able to find the
answer to.

What type of network should I set up and what protocols
and services should I set up with it.

Here is what I can tell you and what I think is needed to
make an decision:

Cable modem connected to a linksys (yes I know but it was
an impulse purchase) wireless router. I have one multi OS
computer 98 and 2k, connected to the router with an
ethernet cable. This is daddys computer.

I have another computer running 2k. It is equiped with a
network card and a wireless USB network addaptor. The
wireless conects up with the router with no problems. I do
not wish to run cable to this computer. This is my kids
computer.

I plan to add another computer that is so old that the cpu
has no heat sink on it. I would probably run a cable to it
if I needed to.

Here is what I want from my network. The ability to share
an internet connection, the ability to share files, and
security.

I can get to the interface for the router and understand
its set up, security, opening ports, etc.

I had the whole thing running but lost a hd on the main
computer. I am starting over and want to get this right.
When I set it up before I was just lucky it worked at all.
The computer with the wireless conection to the router had
a faster conection to the internet than the one with the
ethernet connection. You could find the other computer on
my little network but to share a file was very very slow.

I am so confused with the different types of networks,
their requirements, as well as their requirements. I guess
that I need someone that understands all that to get me
started in the right direction. I can work the rest out if
I am sure that I am setting up the right thing.

Thanks

just set up you network with tcp/ip you might need to go into the 2000/xp
machines and enable netbios over tcp/ip but hats trivial. your router should
be able to act as a dhcp server and will work somewhat as a firewall. enable
file and print shareing on the other computers and you should be good to
go.

if you going to be gaming you might wanna install ipx support also. this
seems to be the best solutions for networked games when availible. i dunno
if that is just my opinion or a fact but you would prolly benefit from it.

Check the workgroup name on each PC and set the same.
Install "File and printer sharing for Microsoft networking" service on each
PC
