I have a HP 2170xi all in one printer/scanner. I decided to take it to
work where I will ONLY use the scanner, not the printer etc. On my
work computer I want to run the scanner with the most minimum and basic
(trouble free) software possible. I hate the idea of putting the
entire load of crap that HP supplies with this printer/scanner.

Is there some simple windows driver or other simple software package
that will allow me to use the scanner at work. It is a USB connection.

PS when I plugged in the USB connection Windows said it found new
hardware but could not find the driver and nothing shows up in
"printers and faxes".

At a minimum to run the Scanner, you have to install the TWAIN driver and
some Photo Editor.

But it does not look like HP has provided just a Twain Driver. You have to
install the whole Full Solution Software Driver. A 166 MB download or from
the CD provided.

Irfanview is a free Photo View/editor that has a TWAIN interface. It is a
small download and is not a full blown Photo editor such as Photoshop.

You do need the plug-ins also.

There is also VueScan. A stand alone Scanner driver. You have to spend a
minimum of $50 to get any use of VueScan. VueScan's trial version puts a
Water Mark on every scan.

The list of supported scanners does list your scanner.
