I thought at first it was Microsoft Verified Programmer in regards to a qualification you can earn from microsoft.
I remember in another conversation an MVP said it mean Most Valued Programmer or omething like that.
If that is the case what is the difference between an MVP and a non MVP?
Just wondering

Jax,
MVP = Most Valuable Professional, an award given by Microsoft for "community
service".

MVPs have been given an award from Microsoft, non-MVPs have not received the
award.

Hope this helps

Do you get a trophy
Have there ever been cases of fake MVP's giving bad advice or poser MVP's?

Well, you get nominated :-)

Sort of - we get a certificate, plus some gifts.

Not sure about this. I have seen plenty bad advice being given out from real
MVP's at times, and I am sure there are some fake ones around, too, though.

I got a trophy. Kind of like the ones they give out at bowling leagues.

Oh, and you get a t-shirt. Speaking of which, I happen to be a medium.
Why do they never have t-shirts in my size. What is it about programmers
that says that they must wear L or XL t-shirts? =)

The preceeding was all tongue-in-cheek.

I take XM myself. Very hard to find.

They do Xtra medium now?
How does that work?
XSmall means smaller and XLarge means larger so does XM mean larger medium? If so is there a LM (smaller medium L = less, opposite of Extra)?

Just a bad joke. Sorry.

Who nominates a person? Does one ask their Microsoft buddies to nominate
them or is their some independent process where nominations just happen?
Recognition does not mean as much if someone asks for it.

That is their own process, I believe. But I've read in a thread about MVP
award before that on the Indian MVP site there is an application form where
the indian programmers can apply to be nominated. But either way MS guys do
assessment before nominate the candidates.

Based on the quality and quantity of posts by some MVP's it's obvious that
they deserve the recognition.

If you're a medium, can you tell what I'm thinking right now?

Some MVPs are nominated by other MVPs, and some are nominated by people
within Microsoft. The nominations then go through an approval process, where
several MS people look at what the nominee has done and make a decision. The
same thing happens each year at re-award time, though the vast majority of
MVPs do such a great job that it's merely a formality.

Jax,
Do you get a trophy?
We don't get trophy's per se, however we do get some nice gifts, I'm sorry
awards.

Any one can put anything they want in the display name when they post. If
you spend enough time in the newsgroups you can tell who knows what they are
talking about and who doesn't.

Here is the list of current MVPs:

Does Microsoft really understand the value of the MVP's? Learning C# would
not have been the great experience it has been without the *dotnet* MVPs,
especially Mattias Sjögren.

Well, MS is pretty nice to MVPs, yes. I've certainly got no complaints
on that front.
