I want to use a low cost hardware device -- like just a
flat screen, keyboard, mouse, and network connection with
RDP to my central home PC. This way my wife can work on
things while I am doing other things in my office.

So...hardware options?

Cheap second computer with access through a network to your one.

At the present time, Windows XP is limited to a single session, so not
withstanding buying a Windows 2003 Server, you wouldn't be able to do
this..
