I recommend you actually try the LCD monitor first with a game you like
and play a lot, before you buy it. This may not always be possible, but
in my experience it really helps.
For instance, I got suckered into buying a Samsung 213T 21.3" LCD
recently, because all my friends were telling me it was fine for gaming.
Well, for them it may be, but for me the motion blur and ghosting was
driving me up a wall. Also, the dynamic range of this monitor, even
though it's advertised as being 500:1 contrast ratio, was far worse than
evem my 4-year-old CRT. Dynamic range affects how the LCD can display
color subtleties.
I had to return this LCD monitor. It's a _beautiful_ monitor for the
desktop, but it is not sufficient for gaming, IMHO. And this was almost
top of the line at $1200.
But some people will SWEAR to you a particular LCD monitor is "fine" for
gaming. I can't understand these people, since every LCD I have ever
tried that was supposed to be fine (even ones reviewed on Tom's Hardware)
just wasn't fine, because of the ghosting.
You know how different people have different maximal sound frequencies
that they can hear? Or how different people can see distances
differently? Well, when it comes to LCD's and gaming, I am beginning to
think some people have different response times in the rods and cones
in their retinas or something. The reason I am beginning to think this is
because some people swear their LCD is just as good as their old CRT
when it comes to response time, when my eyes can see that this is not
true. You can even try this by tracking the mouse pointer with your
eyes as you move it semi-rapidly across the screen. On any LCD, the
mouse pointer looks blurred to me, while on a CRT, I can track it and
it looks not blurred but as crisp as it looks while at rest.
The only conclusion I can reach is that some people just have slower rods
and codes in their retinas... and to them it's all the same. Maybe
you have fast rods and cones like me -- which is why I recommend you try
an LCD with a game before you buy it..
