My machine has half a gig of DDR SDRAM. But there are different kinds,
like PC 2700 and PC 3200. How do I find out which kind my machine has
already. The system info function in XP tells me I've got half a gig,
but not what kind of memory it is. Does some utility show that
information? Thanks.

Everest Home Edition (last freeware version) is available here:

http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/page2.html

the download is about halfway down the page. Install the program and under
"Motherboard", then SPD it will identify the make and type of RAM you are
using.

If you have a store bought machine (Dell, etc) you can go to www.crucial.com
and enter the information about the make/model of your machine and they will
tell you what memory is compatible.

You could open your case, unplug the computer, take the RAM out and look
at it :-)

The Crucial site worked perfectly. Thanks all.

You are welcome - they have a nice tool that will inspect your computer
(most of them) without having to open the case, it's worked in many
systems that we've tested.
