How does one find what types of codecs different software uses. How does one find if file is saveed in .wmv or .avi or .wav? I use MyDVD and will try to learn Encore DVD. Does one have a choice to capture or save in one or another format or codec?
Like Andre, I too am grateful for the patient & smart souls who take the time and effort to answer my questions. As well I learn from answers to other questions too. So thanks John, Graham, Latha & others. --mo

Hi Mo,

You have choices as you lead up to making a DVD.... check the file extension
of a video after you make it or get it, to see if it's a WMV, AVI, WAV, etc.

Then, to check the codecs it needs to play it, get the free GSpot
utility..... link on the Setup > Software page of my website, in the
Utilities section. It'll help.

Hi there Mo,

Its so easy once you realize you will have a quick laugh yourself.

Movie Maker can create only two kinds of resulting video. They are in the
WMV format which is gaining popularity but is still a very long way behind
the other format which is AVI. I think its fairly obvious that the only
reason AVI is an option is because without it not many people would bother
using Movie Maker. The reason is that the AVI format is widely available,
there is no copyright, its very versatile being able to encompass other
compression systems within its output.

You do not need to worry about how to find out what codec does what. Its
only a matter of interest if something is not working. For the very large
proportion of people using Movie Maker they simply press File > Save Movie
File, follow the questions through to the point of choosing a WMV or an AVI
output and let the software get on with it. All you need to know is where
the resulting file is being saved...

If it is your intention to put the file, as I do, into a DVD disk you will
need to use a DVD authoring package. I have not yet heard of any DVD
authoring software that cannot use the AVI output from Movie Maker (I would
be very surprised if such a thing exists)

In the event that you need further help or are having problems, do please
visit my web site where there are FAQ's and Tutorials on one or two matters
that might in the future be of some use.
