What kind of CD burner should I get?

My computer doesn't have a CD burner, and attempts to replace the current
CD rom with a Samsung SM-308 CD-RW/DVD drive caused some weird boot disk
errors that wouldn't allow the computer to load Windows.

So, I need a new CD burner drive, but at this point I'd settle for an
external CD burner as well. But it would have to be fast, and relatively
inexpensive. What should I look for?

You might consider a DVD burner. The NEC 8x 2500 is only about 75
dollars or so and it burns CD's and DVD+-RW.

Here ya go. Asus quality, fast, relatively inexpensive and includes Nero
software, as well. The following link is black, but this is also available
in beige, I think. -Dave

So how are you connecting the Samsung within your current setup? Is it
on IDE port 1 or IDE port 2? Does it share the cable with another
device? Perhaps you have jumpered it incorrectly and that is what is
causing problems.

I connected it the same way the CD rom that came with this computer was
connected, I just switched it. I took the existing CD rom out and replaced
it with the Samsung. Then I started up the computer, and got the boot disk
error. I then took the Samsung out and put the original one back in, and it
started up fine. So it seems that the computer requires that CD rom in
order to start, for some reaosn.

What about the Master/Slave configuration on the new drive?

Mmm, is the original CD Rom device auto detected on that IDE port? I
should have thought so, but it may well be worth double checking your
BIOS settings just to be sure.
