Word processing is "working with words on a computer" ... you could call
it "writing" or "typing". The term originated in (probably) the 1970's
as dedicated and centralized organisations of typists moved from
typewriters to "word procesors" which were the first computers that did
what typewriters did--plus more. (If you need to know what a typewriter
is, see http://xavier.xu.edu/~polt/typewriters.html)
See www.microsoft.com/office for informatin about Excel (Microsoft's
Spreadsheet) and Word (Microsoft's Word Processor).
