Allows one to remote control another machine.
VNC is a very good free software that provides remote control features
over the network. Drawbacks that I can think of is that boot time
control is not possible since it needs to start up as a service and
that does not happen until late in the boot cycle.
Apart from that, older versions were not as secure compared to to
current versions that have tight security features built in.
The best feature is that you have 2 modes (I know of) to access the
VNC server. One is the small and handly java applet that runs on your
system or u can use the browser interface.
Let me know in case you need additional help to set up and configure.
It is a very simple process.
