What is this Update??

CGB

I don't know if this is the proper forum or not, because I don't have the
foggiest idea about what I'm talking about.

I faithfully do my updates on my XP SP2 machine. All is updated except I
need SP1 and 2 for NET framework. I have no idea what that means. Any
researching I do at MSN gives me explanations which are totally Greek to me
e.g. " FIX: You may experience issues with Windows Communication Foundation
peer channel connections ." OH MY GOSH!!! :)

I am an avid home user who likes to be current. Do I need that fix or is it
for people who are programming complicated things, or what. It sounds to me
that people who might be programming in machine language or something would
need it, but do I???

Thanks.

1.1 Framework and 2.0 Framework are libraries which you can download.

Then, you could download a program ...which would run using the framework.

If you download the frameworks now, then when you get the new program, you
only have to get a small version, because you have the baseline code
already.

.......

My dumbed down advice. Just get the updates under "Critical" that MS tells
you to get.
And get the software updates as well. They won't hurt you, and if you ever
want to run a program built on top of the framework, it'll work.

.........

Think of the frameworks like a CD-ROM Drive.

Because you have a CD-ROM drive in your computer, I can send you just a CD
with pictures on it..that you can look it.

If you didn't have a CD-ROM drive in your computer....then I'd have to send
a CD... AND send you a CD-ROM....for you to look at my images. You'd have
to install the CD-ROM in order to look at my CD of images.

However, once you have a CD-ROM drive....anyone could send you a CD with
pictures on it that you could look at.

Thus the CD-ROM is the "framework" piece, because you only need to get it
once. And once you have it...different people can give you a CD to look
at.....thus you're prepared for any CD that comes your way.

Sloan,
Thank you for the reply. It's clear, concise and makes sense to me.

I'm kinda the school "if it ain't broke don't fix it." However, if I need
SP 1 and 2, I must have it on my machine anyhow, so why not update it. I'll
wait for a rainy day when I have nothing else to do and see what happens.

Again, thanks.
