If I open "Windows" on my C Drive, I find a number of files in blue type like
"$NtUninstalkB958688$". What are these files? Can they be deleted without
harm? There are a lot of them, some of them showing date time only one
minute apart.

They're actually archives -- that's the term for a set of compressed
files and folders -- that contain the information needed to uninstall
updates you receive from Windows Update.

You certainly may remove these archives /IF/ you are very certain that
you will never want to uninstall the corresponding updates. For that
reason, it's a good idea to wait a few weeks after installing an update
before you remove the uninstaller. Moreover, there are some uninstallers
you do /not/ want to remove.

Those folders are for uninstalling Windows updates and
Hotfixes. It is perfectly fine to delete them, but you
must not delete this folder:

C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\

That folder is used by Automatic Updates. But before you
delete them for good, copy them to a CD or DVD, in case
you need to uninstall an update in the future.

If your PC is running well and you have no need to uninstall system updates,
you can delete them. MVP Doug Knox has a free app that will delete the
updates and also remove them from the add/remove list in the registry. You
can get it here: http://www.dougknox.com/ On the left side, click on Win
XP Utilities and then click on: Remove Hotfix....
